Larry Janesky, owner and founder of Basement Systems, Inc., one of the world's authorities in basement and crawl space environments, and author of three books on the subject, talks about different available solutions for homeowners who are not planning a full basement finishing project but would like to waterproof and improve the looks of their basement walls.
A common mistake homeowners make is to use waterproofing coating or paint. Most hardware store bought waterproofing coats are not permanent solutions. The ground moisture consistently wicking through the porous concrete walls will cause them to bubble up and peel off, so the coating will need to be reapplied every few years. Latex based coatings have the potential to cause even more problems, because latex supports mold growth.
If you have irregular, stone basement walls, Larry recommends the CleanSpace liner. Developed as a superior vapor barrier solution for crawl spaces, the CleanSpace liner is usually tucked into the drainage system and will keep wall moisture from evaporating into the basement and divert any water buildup to the drain tiles.
Regular concrete walls will benefit from the BrightWall acrylic, waterproof panels, which also work to divert wall moisture to the drainage system.
If you would like to add some level of thermal protection to the walls, consider insulated, pre-finished ZenWall panels.
